WORLD LAUGHTER DAY at St. Mark's Girls Secondary School

The celebration of laughter day is a positive manifestation for world peace and is intended to build up a global consciousness of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. On this note our school too celebrated World Laughter Day on 2nd May 2012.

The day began with a discussion on “laughter” by the volunteers of DELHI LAUGHTER CLUB. Later, the volunteers made the students practice ‘LAUGHER YOGA’ which proved to be a great stress buster for all. Also a painting competition was organized on the junior as well as the senior level with “Laughter” as the theme. The students expressed the true significance of laughter with their exquisite ideas and drawings.

Discovery Of India: Efforts for Environment

This year our school joined hands with the British Council to protect the environment by participating in the Great Banyan Project.  The students of our school contributed waste paper for the “A Million Notebook Challenge" initiative under which paper waste was collected and recycled for making notebooks for the less advantaged children. Further, they also took out the Cleanest Drive on 30 September 2011. The students made a humble endeavour along with their parents as they are concerned about the squalor that is accumulated on the roadsides making them a dumpster. The parents and the students helped each other in a syndicate manner to clean the commercial place adjacent to the school. The volunteers made a sincere attempt to spread awareness to help keep the surroundings clean. Two link schools of SMGS also carried out such cleanliness drives in their respective countries namely Sekolah Menengam Sains Muzaffar School, Melako Malaysia and ITG Deledda Via Rismondo 6, I-634133 Trieste, Italy.

STUDENTS OF ST.MARK’S MEERA BAGH ATTEND PARYAVARAN MITRA MELA

Feb. 7, 2011

2 students Shivangi Arora (VIIIA) and Tanya Gupta (VIIIB) of the Eco Club of St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Meera Bagh, participated in Paryavaran Mitra Mela, in Ajmer, from 31 Jan. to 4 Feb.2011.  They were accompanied by their teacher in charge Ms. M. Pathak.  A host of guest lectures, activities, competitions like poster making for students and teachers, games and Nature walks, generated environmental awareness amongst the participating students and teachers alike.

These lectures were given by Dr. Madhu and Dr. K. K. Sharma who are avid bird watchers.  Mr. Farhan Contractor gave an excellent presentation on how people of Rajasthan are doing Rain Water Harvesting by making Beris and Step Wells.  All this has led to increase in the water table, thereby making agriculture possible in these areas, where women had to walk for 7-8 hours to just get a pitcher of water.

An Exhibition was also organized in which all participants of 13 states showed their projects and ideas.  The stall which was set up by students of St. Mark’s School, Meera Bagh, was highly appreciated, with people really interested in the various ways to decompose waste and turn it into compost and the eco-friendly products made by the eco club members which were on display.

The bird watching was a wonderful experience, when aquatic birds were shown in Ana Sagar Lake in front of RIE University (Regional Institute of Education).  Students got the opportunity to see rare species of birds like Yellow Footed Green Pigeon, Drongo, Babbler, Stilt, Lapwing and Ducks like Mallard, Shovler, Egrets, Dabchick, Pintail etc.

The Paryavaran Mitra Quiz was the central event of the entire programme in which St. Mark’s students outshined other schools and states.  In the final round there were five finalists from the states of Delhi, Chandigarh, J&K, Chhattisgarh and Punjab.  Students of St. Mark’s topped the quiz with the massive total of 115 points whereas the second position was bagged by students of Chattishgarh with 75 points.  Kudos to the students for their excellent performance!

Heal the world

“HEAL THE WORLD MAKE IT A BETTER PLACE FOR YOU AND

FOR ME AND THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE”…… these words are in a famous song.

We MUST save the world. The Earth  is ours.

If we are bad with the world,  it is bad with us.

So let’s speak about the world and  pollution…

We MUST do something  to save the world.

We took some photos of the rubbish on the beach

We must recycle: plastic, glass, papers, bottles, metal and so on.

We cannot  waste ENERGY,WATER AND  FOOD.

Because  they are PRECIOUS and a lot of people  in the world haven’t  them

WE CAN MAKE A BETTER WORLD FOR US AND THE  NEW GENERATION……

Global Coalition Art Auction Helps Orphans in Uganda

Team Rafiki and The Giving Circle are groups of local volunteers from New York.   They donate their time and efforts to construct a sustainable orphanage for children in the village of Wairaka, near Jinja, Uganda.   Their goal is to construct a an orphanage to house 30 orphans, along with a farm to provide food and a workshop to allow the village adults to sell craft items to support the orphans.   Do far the funds they have raised have purchased the land, dug a well, constructed the farm and animal pens and build a caretakers house.   They plan to build the building for the orphanage this year.   Last June, Global Coalition schools sent their artwork and an auction was held by Bill Reilly and his students at the Bethlehem Central Middle School.  Together the artwork from around the world raised over $1200 for this important project.   This art exchange and sale allowed students around the world to share their art and to use their talents to make the world better for those less fortunate.   There are over 2 million orphans in Uganda due to Malaria and HIV.

St. Mark's Girl's School Students Take on the Environment

St.Mark’s Girls Sr. Sec. School, Meera Bagh, India  became an active participant in the project - 'Phenk Mat!' - an initiative taken up with an aim to reduce the amount of litter thrown from cars. In our school, we believe that through generating interest in the issue of car littering, we can contribute, in a small but effective way to keep our city roads tidy.
This project was flagged off at our school on  with a workshop to sensitize the students about the issue of car littering.
Mr. Rajeev Narang, the resource person and co-ordinator of this project, conducted the workshop and encouraged the students to sign a pledge to dispose off their car litter responsibly. The students even pledged to create awareness and enroll others into the cause. Setting the right example was our Incharge Ms. Shergill, who was the first one to sign the pledge. At the end of the workshop, litter bags and relevant stickers were distributed to all the students who took the pledge. These litter bags provide a practical solution to the problem of car littering.

The students pledged to make this drive successful with their most sincere efforts. They even took out an awareness drive to encourage others

The girls of SMGS are discussing this issue on an International platform too to make it a Global Issue to fight with.

Charging Mobile with Body's Heat & Human Pulse

I am Sarojini Mahajan , a student of ST,MARK'S Sr. Sec public school studying in class 9th.  I am girl with scientific zeal.  You are aware of my idea "charging cell phones with human pulse & body's heat" which has been clicked by Stanford University for further development.  I had sent my idea in IGNITE09 a nationwide competition conducted by NIF every year.  In this competition my idea has won a consolation prize.  But only my idea was chosen by Stanford University.  Actually Stanford University wanted to charge their new E-books while using it ,so they contacted NIF & they referred my idea to them.  They liked my idea & decided to work on it.

Many newspapers & news channels wanted my interview about my idea.  NCERT also approached me as they wanted my interview to be printed in their monthly magazine.  I had gone to meet honorable Prime Minister of India through CNN-IBN for a children's day program.
On 30th Nov 2009 I went to IIM-Ahmedabad to receive my award from Honorable Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.  I further wish to grow & contribute in the field of Science & Technology & serve the mankind.  Thank you
Best regards from Sarojini Mahajan

Shikha Safaya's Essay on Global Warming

Why are we only talking and discussing more, and doing less?

The countdown to our doom has begun. Yet, we don’t really seem to be alarmed by it or do anything much.

The rate at which climate change is spreading its effects is much quicker than what we are doing to prevent it.

This problem would continue till we all change our lifestyles and put technology to some good use rather than on military funding. Three of the most important and urgent changes needed are less consumption of resources, fully adopting eco-friendly technology and building smarter machines, cars, buildings and cities. Also, population growth needs to be checked by individual countries as they are only going to put more pressure on the already depleting resources.

We wouldn’t want our cities to look like this?

All of us are using more than required resources, and moreover, wasting resources unnecessarily. We don’t care about what happens to the garbage that we dump in our dustbins-it as good as gone. Biodegradable waste, recyclable material, all gone.  So much electricity is wasted- we never mind our ACs running for hours together. Hardly do people know that one hour of running an AC can produce 1 kg of Carbon Dioxide. We find comfort in our lavish cars, even if we can walk that distance. How lazy and dependable humans become on things created by their own selves!
The second issue is a problem on which we will be fighting our future world wars- fuel resources. If we continue to extract crude oil at the present rate, the world resources would finish in a mere 45 years! (We don’t expect it to finish that soon, isn’t it?) One day of a strike or shortage of fuel, and an entire city shuts down. What would we do after 45 years! Although eco-friendly resources is a common solution said by all, we are not really adopting it fully and making it a part of our needs. Why are the governments around the world not taking an initiative to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels ? Is it because their earnings will be affected, as eco-friendly energy is free?

Or because every country, big or small, can utilize these resources to their full potential and develop quicker?

It is high time we bring the sun and the winds to run our houses.

Lastly, we can really save a lot of time and fuel, by designing smarter buildings, cars, roads and cities. Cars need to be designed in a way that maximum people can be accommodated in the least space. This will also accommodate more people on the road. Cars need to have better engines that are more efficient and can utilize the fuel to travel the maximum distance. The roads should be designed in a way that every individual travels the least possible distance to reach his destination. Furthermore, if each car is programmed to travel on a single line to its destination, there would be no more accidents or traffic jams.

This is what I feel can be done to reduce the effects of global warming. We have very little time left with us to implement these decisions. Thus, these ideas need to be promoted on a much larger scale. After all,

“We have not inherited this world from our forefathers- we have borrowed it from our children.”

 Thank you,

Shikha Safaya

 NO UNIVERSAL DEFINITION OF TERROR

   Dear Mr. Obama,

We are highly obliged to share our views on the widespread impact of TERRORISM. "Terrorism" usually refers to the killing of innocent people by a private group in such a way as to create a media spectacle. The whole world has been a victim of terrorism and has suffered in terms of loss of precious human lives and property. As we know there is no sanctuary or safe heaven anywhere in the world where terrorists cannot infiltrate. Over the last two decades, the terrorists whatever be their nationality, have proved to the hilt that they can strike at any place at any time however impregnable could be the foolproof defence of their target they aim at.

As being concerned towards our world we want our world to be free of destruction of terror at any cost. Terrorism has not only affected INDIA but also the other parts of the world. Like we take the recent case of the Mumbai blast, which has brought pain and loss to a degree that can hardly be imagined.

Now, we would like you to tell your views on what you think about terrorism in India and in other parts of the world. What do you think that who are the main culprits? What will you do to solve the problem which has terrorised the minds of the people. We personally feel that the whole world should work together and take out a solution to this problem.

As being a new President of US we think that you will prove to be a responsible president not only for US but help for the entire world.

Thank You,

Shrishti M & Harshpreet L

Endangered Species

For NO FRAMES option, click HERE

It is not just in other parts of the world that species are under threat of extinction. The danger exists right here in our own country -- in Portugal. One example is the Iberian or Spanish Lynx, which has been disappearing from the Portuguese landscape in past years. The Iberian Lynx is critically endangered, and is the world's most threatened species of cat.

The Iberian lynx weighs 9 - 13 kg (20 - 30 lb). It usually occurs in a mosaic of woodland or dense scrub and open pasture where it feeds mainly on rabbits. This cat is predominantly nocturnal and is an excellent tree climber. It uses a variety of locations for breeding lairs, even including old stork nests as much as 9 - 12 m (30 - 40') above the ground. Home ranges of males and females generally do not overlap other ranges of the same sex. Male ranges overlap one or more female ranges.

The Serra da Malcata in Portugal includes a natural reserve designed to protect about 20 sq. km/eight sq. miles of forested wilderness and refuge of wolves, otters and valuable vegetable species. But it is specially known for being one of the last homes of the rare Iberian lynx (Lynx pardina), and there is a campaign to save this endangered species.

As a result of habitat loss and scarcity of its main prey, the European rabbit, the Iberian Lynx has an extremely fragmented distribution throughout its remaining natural range in Spain and Portugal. The Lynx population of Portugal constitutes less than 10% of the total species distribution, favouring certain highlands and some portions of the central and southern plains.

Lynx and their habitat are fully protected and are no longer legally hunted. Their critical status is mainly due to road casualties, poaching, and loss of habitat.

Can one person really change the world?

History has shown that sometimes one person with a great idea can make the world a better place.  In our letters of introduction, many of us across the world have stated that we are concerned about our world and wish to make it better.  We have stated that we are concerned about social, political, and environmental problems.  How can we use our website to create a project that students and teachers can participate in, to make the world a better place?  To do this would require a good idea, along with a commitment to act on that idea.

Write an essay which describes a concern that you have about a global issue.  Describe the problem and its causes.  Describe how the problem is affecting all of us.  Then propose a solution that your fellow global coalition students in our classrooms around the world can do to help to solve this problem.  Be as specific as possible.  Describe what each of our classrooms should do and how should they do it.  What will be the effect of our actions?  Remember that your teachers will post the best essays on the website.  Hundreds of students will read your idea.  This is your chance to really change the world.   So put your best efforts into this essay!
