Quilts for a cause

Fashion and Fabric students doing needlework for the needy

Students in Mrs. Segal’s Fashion and Fiber class are not only learning how to quilt, but about teamwork and community service as well.

Over the next two weeks, students will be making quilts for those affected by the recent storms and flooding or otherwise in need.

“It’s not only really fun, but it feels great to help out,” said Lauren Zemering, a junior in Mrs. Segal’s class.

Mrs. Segal said she came up with the project as a way to instill a sense of community and volunteerism in her students.

“I wanted my Fashion and Fiber students to be part of something that was a community effort and reached out to others,” she said. “They’ve learned teamwork, collaboration and that volunteer work is extremely important.”

And it’s not just Mrs. Segal that has set the example. Numerous individuals and businesses throughout the community have donated fabric and materials, and several parents have helped as well.

“This is a great project and I’ll help out as often as I can,” said Lois Halek, who joined her daughter Amanda in the class Thursday afternoon, Oct. 27.

Mrs. Segal emphasized the fact that the students were randomly placed in their groups, so new relationships were forged.

“They’ve worked with people they may not have worked with before and at the end they’re going to take pride in what they’ve done, how they did it, and the fact that what they’ve made is helping someone out,” she said.

The sense of community isn’t lost on the students.

 “The volunteers and donations have made it more of a community thing than a class thing,” said Lauren.

“It’s unique because we’re using the skills we’re learning to actually help people in need,” said Elisabeth Pritchett.

This was reiterated by Mary Kate McDonough. “We’re very fortunate to be able to help people who may not be as fortunate as we are or who have lost things in the recent storms.”

Mrs. Segal said she wanted to extend her appreciation to those who have helped, including math teacher Andrea Turner and guidance counselor Joann Honeywell. Businesses like JoAnn Fabrics in Colonie and The Quilter’s Studio in Clarksville have also helped tremendously, she said.

“Really, the list is a long one,” said Mrs. Segal. “Even teachers from other school districts have helped out.”
