Grassroots Giver Lab School Project
As a way of giving back this season, a group of Lab School students from BCHS have decided to organize a goods drive for the homeless. As winter approaches, the homeless encounter very hard times as well as harsh weather conditions.
The students have collaborated with a non-profit organization, located in Albany, called Grassroots Givers, and are asking each of the grades to bring in a separate item, with the hopes of providing as many necessities for these individuals as possible. For sanitary reasons we ask that all items excluding gloves and mittens be newly purchased. All items can be dropped of to your student's classroom. Thank you!
socks of all sizes
1st grade: shampoo
2nd grade: bars of soap
3rd grade: mittens and gloves of all sizes
4th grade: deodorant
5th grade: toothpaste and tooth brushes
Toys for Tots Collection
We are doing a Toys for Tots toy drive again this year. Everyone is invited to bring an unwrapped new toy and drop it in the Toys of Tots Collecdtion box. Drop Boxes are located throughout the school. You can drop off a toy from Monday, Dec. 2 through Friday, Dec. 13. Local Marines will deliver toys to children in need in the Capital District.
Help Slingerlands Join the Crayola ColorCycle Program!
What is Crayola ColorCycle? ColorCycle is a sustainability initiative designed to turn used markers into energy!
How does it work? Used plastic markers are collected by schools and sent to an energy conversion site where the markers are collected in a large container. The plastic is melted and through a process, the hot liquid turns into a clean-burning liquid fuel. The fuel can be used to heat a home, run a car, or cook food!
Can any markers be sent in? Yes! Colorcycle accepts ALL BRANDS of markers. This INCLUDES dry erase markers and highlighters!
Our collection begins on Nov. 1 and continues until April 30. The school that collects the most wins $500! A collection bin will be in the school lobby. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Bush at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Slingerlands Book Fair is still online!
The in-person book fair may be coming to a close, but you also have access to our online book fair until Tuesday, December 3. Our online fair will have items not found at the in-person book fair like E-Storia books, book series, an expanded selection of titles and out-of-stock books as well! Online book selections are shipped FREE to the school and will be distributed to your child. This is a great way for relatives to do some holiday shopping for your child!
Girl Scouts helping Humane Society

Peace Day Assembly
Slingerlands has been celebrating Peace Day for several years. [Read more about Peace Day here.] This year, Mrs. Sieme our Art Teacher worked with all of our students to created Peace Flags. These were displayed during our assembly as children lined up to create a peace sign of their own. Mrs. Palagyi, our Guidance Counselor worked with students to create a video where children from every class identified what peace means to them. All of our classes designed a puzzle piece that fit together to form a world that identifies what they can do to contribute to world peace. A special thank you to all of our teachers for incorporating the peace theme into their curriculum. VIEW PHOTOS »

Volunteers Need for Reading Program
This year, Slingerlands is starting up their Reading Buddies Program. This was formerly known as Jumpstart. Volunteers are needed to read with children in kindergarten, first and second grades to help develop and support basic reading skills. The program will match volunteers with the needs of individual teachers. Volunteers will meet with students individually during the school day for possibly multiple days during the week. Materials and support will be provided. If you're interested e-mail Jan Kee at email@example.com.
Do you have an empty ink jet cartridge? An old cell phone? Laptop?
Send them to Slingerlands Elementary and help earn cash for our
school! There is a
collection bin in the lobby at school so feel free to drop them off
or send them to school with your child.
Thanks for your support!
